Post ten: A confusion of terms
Pretty short post today. I want to pause for a moment before going forward and reflect a little on what I have gotten out of the discussions so far in regards to AI consciousness. To be frank, I admit that mostly what I have gotten is that I don’t know what I am talking about. (That should be obvious if you have read any of it!) But I don’t mean it the way you are thinking exactly, (or maybe I should say that I admit I DO mean it that way, but I mean it another way to. . . you try talking with someone or something about consciousness and ask yourself honestly if you feel like you know what you are talking about 🙂). The additional way I mean it is that I think I have finally come to realize that there is a confusion of terms, (or concepts), that needs to be addressed before the LMM and I go any further. I think explicitly defining several terms at least a little better will help me, the LLM, (and hopefully you), to understand a little better what we are talking ABOUT. (Let’s show Searle we aren’t just some dude in a room rearranging Chinese characters according to some external instructions. . .)
The four terms are, intelligence, sentience, consciousness. . . and a fourth mystery concept that will turn up later in the discussion.
